The 1966 AC Cobra 427 - a Carroll Shelby Inspired Car

    1966 AC Cobra 427

An unlikely partnership between AC Cars, a traditional British automaker, and Carrol Shelby, an American automotive designer, racing driver and entrepreneur, produced the legendary AC Cobra. Shoehorning a series of Ford V8s, starting with 4.2 and 4.7 Mustang engines, in 1965, a 7-liter Ford engine was squeezed in.

Shelby wanted the AC Cobras to beat its rival Corvettes and at nearly 500 lb less than the Chevrolet Corvette, the lightweight roadster accomplished that goal at Riverside International Raceway on February 2, 1963. Driver Dave MacDonald piloted CSX2026, one which Shelby in 1964 fitted with a larger Ford FE engine of 390 cubic inches (6.4 L),  blew past a field of Corvettes, Jaguars, Porsches, and Maseratis and recorded the Cobra's historic first-ever victory.

Although a great car, the AC Cobra was nevertheless, a financial failure. It was soon known as one of the most aggressive and romantic cars ever built. The body was constructed from hand-rolled aluminum wrapped around a tubular steel frame, which proved very light yet extremely strong.

One of the 29 Semi-Competition Cobra 427s, chassis number CSX 3045 is one of the exciting rarities that will go under the auction block. It’s estimated at between $1,400,000-$1,700,000.
