1960 Aston Martin DB4

1960 Aston Martin DB4

From 1958 to 1963, 1040 fixed head, 70 convertible and 95 fixed head DB4 GTs were built by Aston Martin, called the Aston Martin glory years by ushering in the breed of classic six-cylinder DB Astons that catapulted the automaker onto the world stage.

In the movie The Italian Job, Michael Caine’s favorite car during filming was the silver Aston, a 1962 Volante 163 ELT.

The Superleggera (tube-frame) body which was designed by Carrozzeria Touring in Milan, is a technique where aluminum-alloy panels are roller over a framework of steel tubes. The Aston Martin had an Italian design but it was built in England. Its Continental looks caused a sensation on its unveiling at the 1958 London Motor Show.

The DB4 Astons acquired a new grace and refinement – an ultimate flowering of the DB4 grand tourer theme. The car looked great and was fast. The DB4 was the predecessor of the Aston Martin DB5 which forever will be remembered as the James Bond Aston.

The car, designed by the famed Italian coachbuilding company, was an offshoot of the DB4 which nowadays, due to their rarity and popularity could command one and a half million dollars in auction.

The front suspension of the car: double wishbones with coil springs and telescopic shocks. Rear: live axel located by trailing arms and Watt linkage with coil springs and lever-arm shocks.

A recent news has it that Icon Automaker has recently received a fair amount of press due to its plan it building awesome custom cars, reputedly a modernized version of the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato Volante.

The project appears to be still in its concept phase but it will be great news if the project comes into fruition.
